Վասկո դա Գամայի ղեկավարած նավատորմը դեպի Հնդկաստան տանող ծովային ճանապարհի հայտնագործման նպատակով, շրջանցեց Աֆրիկան հարավից, ապա հասավ Հնդկաստան և միաժամանակ ապացուցեց, որ Աֆրիկան առանձին մայրցամաք է: Աֆրիկայի հյուսիսային և հյուսիս- արևելյան շրջանները մարդկության հնագույն բնօրրաններից են: Այստեղ՝ Նեղոս գետի ստորին հոսանքում էր գտնվում Հին Եգիպտոսը, որը հայտնի է իր բուրգերով: Հետաքրքիր է, որ այս շրջաններից հարավ ընկած է աշխարհի ամենամեծ անապատը՝ Սահարան՝ իր անծայրածիր և անանցանելի անապատային ավազաններով: Աֆրիկայի ներքին շրջանները հետազոտել են շատ ճանապարհորդներ, արշավախմբեր, որոնցից առանձնանում են անգլիացի հետազոտող Դավիթ Լիվինգստոնի գլխավորած արշավախմբի 30 տարի կատարած ուսումնասիրությունները:
